CA, US

Work Location Type:  On-site
Company:  QuantumScape Corporation
Description:

QuantumScape developed the industry’s first anode-less cell design, which delivers high energy density while lowering material costs and simplifying manufacturing. Our innovative battery cell technology can store energy more efficiently and reliably than today’s lithium-ion batteries.

Join us on our mission as we transform energy storage to enable a more sustainable future. We are looking to add a Principal Manufacturing Engineer, Principal Member of Technical Staff (PMTS) to our Cell Engineering and Process Development team. This individual will be responsible for developing tools and techniques at the cell assembly level to improve the manufacturability of our solid-state lithium-metal batteries. This work includes designing new processes for cell assembly and experimental validation of these new approaches, equipment troubleshooting and issue triage, and tooling design and testing. Experience working with electrochemical energy storage devices such as lithium-based batteries or similar technology is highly desired.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop new cell assembly tools and techniques for manufacturing scale-up onsite at our San Jose sites

• Refine and improve existing cell assembly tools and techniques for manufacturing scale-up

• Run experiments and use statistics to evaluate multiple different approaches and compare the effectiveness of each in lab and pilot production

• Implement past experience or become familiar with cell assembly methodologies such as cell cleaning, welding, laminate sealing, pouch edge folding, and leak testing.

• Be prepared to take ownership of both automated and manual equipment on the manufacturing floor such as laminate die presses, welders, and foil trimmers

• Create, deliver, and maintain Process Specifications for new, high-volume automation equipment

• Collaborate with and lend technical insights to cell component design teams, equipment design teams, cell mechanical design teams, safety, quality, metrology, and production teams to execute your mission with face to face meetings

SUCCESS FACTORS

• Embrace new challenges, learn new techniques, and surpass internal goals

• Curious, hands-on approach to problem-solving

• Shares a real passion for our mission and vision of a carbonless future

• Demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness allowing smooth adaptation to a constantly evolving environment and work priorities

• Possesses a can-do spirit and is a collaborative leader and teammate

• Organized, meticulous, and has clear written and verbal communication skills

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Proven experience working on and rolling out process development for manufacturing scale-up

• Experience with DOE style experimentation and statistical analysis of data

• Familiarity with at least one scientific programming language, e.g. Python, R, Matlab, or JSL/JMP

• System level CAD experience; strongly desired to have also assembled and tested said systems

• BS or higher degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechatronics, or similar concentration

• Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or minimum of 8 years of experience with a Master’s degree

• Competent in safe laboratory practices especially in handling powders, solvents, and chemicals

• Knowledge or experience with lithium-ion or solid-state battery science is highly desired

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Work is performed in a dry room, fume hood, lab area, or glovebox requiring the use of fine motor skills

• Sitting or standing for extended periods of time

• Reaching and twisting motions with hands

• Lifting up to 25 lbs.
