Title: Member of Technical Staff, Manufacturing Engineer
CA, US, 95131
QuantumScape is on a mission to transform energy storage with solid-state lithium-metal battery technology. The company’s next-generation batteries are designed to enable greater energy density, faster charging and enhanced safety to support the transition away from legacy energy sources toward a lower carbon future.
About the team: The Manufacturing and Yield team is a hands-on group of engineers and technicians dedicated to ensuring smooth, consistent production operations. We work directly on the manufacturing floor — maintaining equipment uptime, improving yield, and resolving production issues as they arise. Our team values collaboration, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
What we need: We are seeking a motivated Manufacturing Engineer at the Member of Technical Staff (MTS) level to support production operations and yield improvement on our Gen 1 battery manufacturing line. This is a floor-based role where you will work closely with senior engineers, operators, and technicians to maintain equipment performance, troubleshoot production issues, and contribute to yield improvement efforts. The ideal candidate is hands-on, eager to develop their engineering skills in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, and effective at executing assigned tasks with attention to detail and follow-through.
What You’ll Do:
Floor Operations & Equipment Support
- Support day-to-day operations of assigned manufacturing tools and process stations on the Gen 1 battery manufacturing line.
- Work alongside operators and technicians to monitor equipment performance and escalate issues to senior engineers as needed.
- Respond to equipment alarms and production abnormalities, assist with containment actions, and document findings.
- Assist with equipment maintenance, calibration, and documentation in accordance with established schedules and procedures.
- Execute assigned tool adjustments and process changes under the guidance of senior engineering staff.
Yield Monitoring & Data Support
- Collect, organize, and analyze production data to support yield monitoring and reporting activities.
- Assist in tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) using data tools such as SPC charts, dashboards, and control plans.
- Support root cause analysis efforts by gathering relevant data, preparing summaries, and documenting findings.
- Build and maintain reports and tracking tools that support team decision-making on yield and process performance.
Troubleshooting & Problem Solving
- Participate in structured root cause analyses (RCAs) for equipment and yield-related issues under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Support implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs), tracking progress and documenting results.
- Learn and apply troubleshooting methodologies to assigned equipment and process areas.
- Assist in maintaining and updating SOPs, troubleshooting guides, and work instructions for assigned manufacturing areas.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with Operations, Quality, and Maintenance teams to support line performance and address production challenges.
- Communicate clearly and proactively with team leads and senior engineers on task status, findings, and open questions.
- Participate in team meetings and engineering reviews, contributing observations and data from floor activities.
Skills You’ll Need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field, with 2+ years of relevant manufacturing or engineering experience; or Master’s degree with some relevant internship or industry experience.
- Some hands-on experience in a manufacturing, production, or laboratory environment; experience in battery, semiconductor, or precision manufacturing is a plus.
- Familiarity with basic equipment troubleshooting and a willingness to learn hands-on mechanical and process systems.
- Exposure to data analysis tools such as Python, JMP, Excel, or equivalent; ability to organize and present data clearly.
- Strong attention to detail and follow-through, with the ability to execute assigned tasks reliably and on time.
- Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and grow technical skills in a fast-paced engineering organization.
Nice to have:
- Hands-on experience with automated manufacturing or lab equipment.
- Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC) or DOE concepts.
- Experience writing or following SOPs or work instructions in a manufacturing or lab setting.
- Interest or background in electrochemical systems or battery technology.
Physical requirements:
- Work is performed in a dry room, fume hood, lab area, or glovebox requiring the use of fine motor skills and PPE.
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
- Reaching and twisting motions with hands.
- Lifting up to 25 lbs.
ONSITE: This position is required to work onsite 5 days per week to meet the minimum essential duties and requirements of this position. As an on-site manufacturing operations organization, in-person presence is essential to supporting floor operations, building authentic relationships, trust, teamwork, and collaboration.
Compensation & Benefits: Expected salary range for this role is from $88,600 to $120,000 and a final salary will be determined by the candidate's experience and educational background. QuantumScape also offers an annual bonus and a generous RSU/Equity package as part of its compensation plan. In addition, we do offer a tremendous benefits plan including employee paid health care, Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), and other benefits.
