Location:

CA, US, 95110

Work Location Type:  On-site
Company:  QuantumScape Corporation
Description:

QuantumScape is on a mission to transform energy storage with solid-state lithium-metal battery technology. The company’s next-generation batteries are designed to enable greater energy density, faster charging and enhanced safety to support the transition away from legacy energy sources toward a lower carbon future.

About the team: The EHSS team is a diverse group of engineers and scientists that ensure the safety and compliance of activities at QuantumScape.  We interact with every department and integrate safety and sustainability into all aspects of the development of this cutting-edge technology. Team members pride themselves on their ability to quickly adapt to ever-changing needs of QuantumScape’s technologists.

What we need: As the senior leader of Environment, Health, Safety, and Sustainability (EHSS), you will be the primary architect of safety and compliance for our battery R&D and pilot manufacturing facilities. Given the nature of chemicals used in Li-metal batteries, this role requires a leader who views safety through the lens of a scientist.

You won't just be managing checklists; you will analyze and manage complex chemical lifecycles in addition to managing all EHS activities and programs.

What You’ll do:

  • Chemical Risk Mitigation: Develop protocols for the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials including lithium salts, electrolytes, and emerging anode/cathode powders, solvents, batteries, etc.
  • Process Safety Management: Lead the design and oversight of dry rooms and high voltage testing labs, ensuring robust fire suppression and ventilation systems are tailored to specific chemical hazards.
  • Regulatory Leadership: Ensure compliance with EPA, Fire Code, OSHA, and DOT regulations, specifically focusing on the transport of hazardous battery components and waste.
  • Sustainability Strategy: Oversee the "cradle-to-gate" carbon footprint of our battery cells, driving initiatives for closed-loop recycling and ethically sourced raw materials.
  • Emergency Response: Act as the technical lead for incident response.
  • Safety Culture: Translate complex hazards into digestible training for engineers, technicians, and laboratory staff.

Skills You’ll Need:

  • Minimum Education: Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related molecular science field. A Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Experience: 10+ years in EHSS leadership, specifically within high-hazard industries (e.g., battery manufacturing, semiconductor, or specialty chemicals).
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Deep understanding of the Electrochemical Series, exothermic reaction kinetics, and the toxicological profiles of battery precursors.

Nice to have:

  • Certifications: CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) is highly desirable

Physical requirements:

  • Work is performed in a dry room, fume hood, lab area, or glovebox requiring the use of fine motor skills
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Reaching and twisting motions with hands
  • Lifting up to 25 lbs.

ONSITE: This position is required to work onsite 5 days per week to meet the minimum essential duties and requirements of this position.  As an on-site R&D and manufacturing operations organization, in-person face to face interaction is essential to building authentic relationships, trust, teamwork, and collaboration.

Compensation & Benefits:

Expected salary range for this role is from $ 154,700 $216,100, and the final salary will be determined by the candidate's experience and educational background. QuantumScape also offers an annual bonus and a generous RSU/Equity package as part of its compensation plan. In addition, we do offer a tremendous benefits plan including employee paid health care, Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), and other benefits.
